How this is calculated
A slat wall is the same even-spacing math as board and batten, run at a finer pitch. Pitch is one slat plus one gap, and the wall has to be a whole number of pitches with a slat at each end.

- gap = (wall width − slat count × slat width) ÷ (slat count − 1)

Common questions
How wide should the gap between wood slats be?
A gap equal to the slat width is the safest look. Narrower gaps read as a solid wall, wider gaps let the backer color dominate.
Should I paint the wall behind the slats?
Yes — paint the backer a dark, matte color before installing. The shadow gaps are what make a slat wall work, and raw drywall behind them flattens the effect.
How do I attach slats without studs everywhere?
Most installers glue with construction adhesive plus a few brad nails, or mount slats to a plywood backer panel that is screwed into studs.
How much does an accent wall cost?
