How this is calculated
LVP calculates exactly like laminate, but plank sizes vary far more between brands, so box coverage should always come from the label rather than a rule of thumb.
- area with waste = (room area − obstructions) × (1 + waste)
- boxes = ceil(area with waste ÷ coverage per box)
- planks = ceil(area with waste ÷ plank area)
- rows = ceil(room length ÷ plank width)
- 1Measure the surfaceMeasure the width and height (or length) of the area in feet, inches, or meters and enter them in the calculator.
- 2Subtract openingsAdd each door, window, or fixture by size and count so their area is removed from the total.
- 3Enter plank and box sizeEnter the plank width and length and the square feet per box from the carton label.
- 4Add a waste overageKeep the default 10% waste allowance for cuts and mistakes, or adjust it for complex layouts and diagonal patterns.
- 5Read the shopping listThe calculator rounds up to whole units to buy and multiplies by your price per unit for an estimated total. Copy or print the plan and take it to the store.
Common questions
How many boxes of vinyl plank do I need?
Take the room area, add 10% waste, and divide by the square feet per box, rounding up. This calculator does it and shows the plank layout.
How much waste for luxury vinyl plank?
10% is typical. Add 15% for herringbone or diagonal installs, which generate far more offcuts.
Can I install LVP over existing flooring?
Often yes, over flat, solid subfloors and even some tile. It does not change quantities, but it can change transition strip needs at doorways.
How long should the stagger be between rows?
At least 6 inches between end joints in adjacent rows, 8 to 12 inches looks better and is stronger.
