How this is calculated

Wainscoting is a frame problem: rails and stiles are fixed, and the panel openings absorb whatever is left over. The calculator solves the panel width so every opening is identical.

  • panel width = panel field width ÷ panel count
  • panel height = wainscot height − top rail − bottom rail
  • stile center #i = running total of stile and panel widths from the left edge

Common questions

How tall should wainscoting be?

About one third of the wall height is the traditional rule — roughly 32 to 36 inches on an 8 foot wall. Taller 48 inch wainscot reads more formal.

How wide should wainscoting panels be?

Panels usually look best between 16 and 30 inches wide, and slightly taller than they are wide. The solver picks a panel count that keeps widths in a comfortable range.

Do panels need to be identical on every wall?

Panel widths should be consistent within a wall. Between walls, aim for similar widths rather than identical ones — matching the count exactly on walls of different lengths looks worse.

What is the difference between wainscoting and board and batten?

Board and batten is vertical battens on a field, typically full or partial height. Wainscoting is a framed lower-wall treatment with a top cap rail and rectangular panels.
